Anna Nightingale’s latest exhibition, Breathe, straddles the abstract and representational. Joseph Agius discussed it with her. JA: Abstract American artist Helen Frankenthaler once said: “You have to know how to use the accident, how to recognise it, how to control it and ways to eliminate it so that the whole surface looks felt and born all at once.” Does accident figure a lot in your work? Sometimes you have to die inside in order to rise from your own ashes, believe in yourself and love yourself to become a new person. Nothing remains as it was. I engage in painting based on what I know and I am interested in… some of the healthiest areas to realise are from your own experience. This new collection is my story of rebirth after a series of traumatic and life- threatening events. It is a story of hitting rock bottom and rising . . . of second chances and starting over. Coming to understand life’s lessons, through a journey of self-discovery, I learnt that to feel fear is part of life. Being courageous comes from within. It is what you do with that unease, when you need to be brave, that makes you stand up and be counted.
